Directions: From Rt. 229 in Southington, turn onto Welch Rd. There's a driving range on the corner. Take Welch Road to the end (Briarwood College on the corner) turn left onto Mt. Vernon Rd. and go 0.2 miles to turn right onto Panthorne Trail. At the end of this street park in the cul-de-sac near the VERY LARGE TREE hedge. The trail isn't very visible from here but if you walk to the right end of these shrubs you'll see it going into the woods past a brown shed. This is a blue blazed trail and aptly named Steep Climb Trail which leads to the Compounce Ridge Trail. For our purposes we'll only be doing about a mile (one way). Four boxes on a short (steep) hike.

Follow blue blazes all the way and keep a close watch out for them, it's easy to get off trail. You'll see a blue sign on a tree right away but it's too faded to read. Cross a stream (or stream bed in dry weather) and watch for blazes on two trees on the left. These are a signal for a left turn starting you up hill. If you go straight here you come to the upper pavilion at Lake Compounce where we went in and wandered around awhile but you can't get beyond the check point without a ticket. You can hear happy noises throughout this hike on a busy day.
You'll be busy for a bit, climbing over rocks but look ahead for a black arrow on a tree pointing left (arrow is missing?). Just after this you'll see a couple of trees lying against rocks (one had a blaze today) and to the left of them (but to the right of the trail)is a large tree wedged in a two sister tree. In a crevice in the rock behind the two sisters is box #1. Rehide out of sight.

Continue on the trail to the top of the rise, going left through a cut log and over a brook. Start looking on the right for a Siamese two sister tree (of a two brand variety) with a blue blaze on one of them and behind them is a small boulder between two trees. Box #2 resides under the boulder's overhang. Rehide out of sight.

Continue on until a double blazed tree near a large boulder.
Go right until you see the trees with trail signs on the left and stand with your back to the sign on the left (or the first one you come to). With your back to the sign, site 320 degrees and look under a slanting rock about 25 steps up the hill for box #3, this used to be a bonus box (store bought stamp). Please poke this box out with a stick, there's no telling what lives in there.

After rehiding well start your climb up the blue blazed trail (blue/yellow goes right). This is quite a climb and very rocky. Just as the trail levels out you'll be standing on a rocky ledge next to a tree with a blaze on it. Site 350 degrees to two rocks with a crevice between them. Poke carefully in the hole for box #4. This is just off of an unmarked trail.

Rehide carefully...thanks visiting. Bring silly colored ink.
