Pulpit Rock Observatory Letterbox
Planted by Eagle Bob and Lightnin’ Bug

This letterbox commemorates the LVAAS Pulpit Rock Astronomical Park, an observatory just a stone’s throw from Pulpit Rock (and within 200 ft of the Pulpit Rock Letterbox). This will give you a 3rd letterboxing reason for undertaking such a strenuous hike!

A description of the Observatory can be found at:

http://www.lvaas.org/pr/main.html

And directions to the park can be found at (this is also a shortcut to Pulpit Rock that saves about ½ mile from the AT route):

http://www.lvaas.org/pr/directions.html

Once there, you’ll notice a bunch of telescopic buildings. Choose the one at the SE corner of the park with the metal staircase (Henry C. Kawecki Observatory). After a long climb, you’ll just want to saunter over there. Find the door where the scope can peak out of and locate a pine tree at the same bearing. The pine is small now, but it will undoubtedly grow! From the pine, sight a tree at 115 deg, 11 paces. This will bring you to the edge of a boulder field. From the tree, take a bearing of 130 deg to several lichen covered pale rocks. Choose the large rock, not the huge one as your target. A basketball sized rock made of the same type of stuff hides the box.

NOTE: To get to this box, you will traverse PA State Gamelands. Hunting is permitted here during the PA game seasons. Be smart and wear your blaze orange (vest and hat recommended) during the autumn. Hunters will appreciate it, as it reduces potential confusion.

Happy Stamping,

Lightnin’ Bug and Eagle Bob
