Please visit the website for directions to the Hilton Area of the Park. There is also a map that shows some of the trails, however, I strongly encourage you to buy the $6.00 map from the Park Ranger as it includes all the trails for all of the park areas and many letterboxes planted in Patapsco State Park.

Park at the parking lot near pavilion 245 and prepare for a hike that lasts about an hour and a half (1.4-1.9 miles depending where you get off). You will be taking the following trails:
Santee Branch Trail marked with White/brown
Pigs Run Trail marked with Purple
Sawmill Branch Trail marked with Red
Buzzards Rock trail marked with Yellow
Forest Glen Trail marked with Blue

Walk down the road that leads away from the parking lot like you are going to the Family campground. About .10 miles from the campground you will see a trail (Santee Branch Trail) take this trail left for the beginning of the hike. Soon you will come upon a three-way intersection, keep on the same trail by taking the left fork. As you continue to walk you will see a little bridge, cross over it. At the next intersection you will see that the Santee trail runs both left and right, take a right and you will be led to the Purple colored Pigs Run Trail that is only .20 miles. As you take this path you will cross under the electrical lines.
You will see a tree with JR +SN on it as you get close to the Blue Forest Glen Trail. You will begin to see the river on the right and it is very rocky to the trail. You will emerge from the trail and see the river and an old Railroad tunnel. This is a very busy area.

Cross over the river and go up the hill (briefly on the yellow path that leads to Red) and follow the Red path. You can see the railroad tracks on your left through a clearing. As you go down the path, you will have to cross over 2 fallen trees. They have been notched in the top with a chainsaw. At the second tree count 10 steps and you will be standing on a rock in the middle of the trail. Use this point to take a compass reading of 290 degrees. You will see a rock with a niche. You will find the letterbox there. Please replace the log to conceal the box. Follow the red trail back to the Family camping area where you will find the road to take you back down to where you parked OR the Red trail connects back to the Santee branch trail to the Road that connects to the road, opposite of where you started.
