Part of the official Texas Longhorn herd resides in the park. The park offers camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and historical reenactments.

DIRECTIONS: 1701 North US Highway 283

BACKGROUND: Fort Griffin was built in 1867 as part of extended frontier protection after the Civil War. As peace eventually came to the frontier and military activity declined, the soldiers stationed at Fort Griffin faced long periods of boredom. Their only recreational outlet, other than hunting and fishing, was going to "The Flat", a ramshackle settlement on the adjacent banks of the Clear Fork. It was here at John Shanssey’s saloon that Wyatt Earp first approached Doc Holliday to ask for information about a train robber named Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh (immortalized in a Pat Green song!). Wyatt was reluctant to talk to Holliday, since it was well known that Doc hated lawmen. However, Doc surprised him with his willingness to suggest that Rudabaugh had back-trailed to Kansas. Wyatt wired this information to Bat Masterson, Sheriff in Dodge City, and Rudabaugh was caught. The unlikely pair of Holliday and Earp formed a friendship in Shanssey’s that would last for years.

CLUES: Enter Fort Griffin State Park and make your way to the Fort ruins. Walk around and imagine yourself living in Frontier Texas. Follow path to the right which leads to the restored Bakery. After touring inside the building (and giving thanks for microwaves), exit the door facing north and walk around to the East to the back of the building, stepping through the fieldstone markings. Under the east facing window is a large boulder. Very stealthily reach down and find the box under covering rocks. Please replace carefully and hide well!
