Fall Back

Clues: easy

Terrain: fairly easy

Time: about 20 minutes to reach the box.

Notes:

- Bartholomew's Cobble is a National Natural Landmark maintained by the Trustees of Reservations. A donation is requested at the visitors’ center at the entrance.

- The letterbox is placed very close to the trail to minimize trampling of the terrain. PLEASE re-hide it VERY well, as it would be visible from the trail if not well hidden.

- Please be discreet when stamping in; this trail has the potential to be quite busy in nice weather.

- Be sure to explore the other trails at Bartholomew’s Cobble. You won’t be disappointed, and you may just find a couple of other letterboxes!

Clues:

Take Route 7 south through Great Barrington and Sheffield. After you pass Sheffield, watch for the sign at Route 7-A for the right hand turn towards Bartholomew's Cobble. Follow the signs to the cobble. Turn right onto Rannapo Road. Go 1-1/2 miles, and then turn right onto Weatogue Road. You’ll see the entrance to Bartholomew’s Cobble and parking on the left.

At the trail head, go right on the Ledges Trail, which goes along the back of the visitors’ center. As you walk, check out the small cave, the natural rock formations that create the “cobble,” and the lovely scenery. You will come to a bench, and just past it, the trail takes you down a “staircase.”

A little further on, you will go up another “staircase” and come to second bench, this one with no back. Just past the bench, you will pass Marker # 4, and very quickly come to Marker # 3. Stand in front of Marker #3, facing the wall. Turn slightly to your left and look for a two-trunked tree growing out of the wall and looming over the trail. At the base of the wall under that tree, you will find the Fall Back letterbox. It is in a hollow in the rock wall, wrapped in camouflage cloth, and covered with a smaller rock.

Stamp in, and please be sure to double-bag the logbook when re-assembling the box. Re-hide the box as well or better than you found it.

After stamping in, continue on the Ledges Trail to return to your car.
