7/22/06 -- Confirmed Missing

From NSB drive toward the community of Bethune and continue until you enter a park with 24 miles of undeveloped Florida coastline that runs between the Atlantic and the Indian River. (Gates close at sundown) Shuttle launches from Kennedy Space Center can be observed from lot 4, but the real attraction is the pristine beaches and coastal forests. There is a $5 fee to enter this park. Good bug spray, sunscreen, and water are highly recommended.

Find the archeological site on your left--a shell midden left by the Timucuan Indians who inhabited the area for 2000 years. Take the boardwalk SW toward the mound. Shortly you'll come to a bench on your left. Just under the edge of the boardwalk beneath the south end of the bench, you will find the box. Be careful when removing it, not only because of wildlife but making certain no one sees you. This is a place frequented by groups of school kids and tour guides.

After stamping, take the boardwalk all the way to the top of the mound. You'll want to make sure you have a stick ready to knock down the many spiderwebs that cris-cross the path. From mid-summer through autumn there is a staggering array of butterflies along the way, all feasting on wild lantana and other tropical flowers that bloom in profusion here. I've never seen so many thousands of tropical butterflies in one place!
