Now don’t get us wrong – we LOVE Texas…but in the same way you love your own family, despite ( or maybe because of) that eccentric old aunt with the 15 cats named Barney or the strange second cousin who collects stubs of used chalk. There are wondrously weird things in Texas, and we’d like to take you to a few of the wackier ones...

BACKGROUND: This mythic island, as mysterious as the Bermuda Triangle, is reputed to be the secret home of legendary creatures. Sirens are believed to sing their irresistible song in a hidden cove on its shore.
It is also whispered that Elvis, Jim Morrison, and Amelia Earhart were all left here by an alien spacecraft and are now living together inside a dormant volcano in the island's center.
The precise location of Bonnie Belle Island is difficult to pinpoint, because most of the time it is invisible. Tradition holds, however, that it can be seen on the fifth Tuesday of the thirteenth month of each year when there is a full moon or on old MSN Maps of White Rock Lake or Yahoo Driving Maps, although it is not identified by name.
However, this island appears to be in danger of disappearing. It has been recently dropped from the online mapping service Mapquest.
According to Larry Bleiberg's report in the Dallas Morning News dated September 7, 2002, Bonnie Bell Island was a deliberate fabrication by the map makers to prevent copyright infringement. In addition, each computerized car navigation system sold in the U.S. included this island. Until recently it was shown on Mapquest maps of the lake, which actually gave a name to the island.
After the Dallas Morning News story garnered a lot of local attention (especially from folks around the lake who were certain that the island never existed) Bonnie Bell Island was removed from the Mapquest and Yahoo maps...another mysterious disappearance???

CLUES: Drive south along West Lawther until you pass the replica of Mount Vernon on your right. Find the parking lot south of Fisher. Walk along the shoreline in a southerly direction and use the wooden bridge to cross over to a peninsula (mind the cyclists thundering over the bridge behind you!). Turn to your left and follow the creek back in the direction from which you came. Turn to your right and locate a group of three large older trees in a clump along the shoreline. At the base of the tree closest to the lake (northernmost) is what you seek. Please replace and recover very well - the association of the lake organizes frequent trash hikes and treasures sometimes get thrown away if not hidden securely.
