One of the things I like to do most is go in search of Gnomes...not the ones you might find in your garden and not the ones you might have read about in the Harry Potter books...these are American Gnomes and each family and area has an extensive history...just like each city and family of bigguns (which is what gnomes call us).

So in order to let you know about my little friends I'm creating a series of letterboxes that will take you to where they live. Now, I have the permission of the gnomes to show you where they live...(it doesn't matter really the gnome homes I am showing you have been "magicked" to look like something else and many are no longer used).

The first letterbox can be found in Sawmill Gulch at the former home of Michel. When you get to the letter box and as you're going look all around you. What many bigguns don't realize is that many gnomes are shapeshifters...so the little chipmunks or the ground squirrels you see might very well be a gnome watching you and laughing. Also the meadow area around this letterbox is a known gnome party spot...every year during Walpurgis night Gnomes from all over gather here to have a big celebration...it is especially popular when Walpurgis lands on the night of a full moon!

To get to the letterbox:
Take the Van Buren exit off I 90 and head north into the Rattlesnake staying on Van Buren (which changes into Rattlesnake). Keep going until you get to the Sawmill Gulch Road. Take a left and drive 1.5 miles. Continue until you have done the following: 1) driven over a bridge, 2) passed a few parking areas, 3) avoided a private drive and gotten onto a dirt road, and 4) had to stop because of a dead-end.
Park here!
Once you are here you will notice a large path going northeastward into the gulch area. Follow this path until it forks. At this fork take the left fork (if you walk on a concrete foundation you've taken the wrong fork). Now you're almost there! Take 40 single step paces on this left fork path until you come to a tree with a diamond with the numbers 24.8 on it. Behind this tree are 4 smaller trees-- 3 that grow very close to each other. Stand and look where the 2 larger of the 3 cross each other. (Approx bearing 301 from magnetic N) You should see a tall stump that has been drilled by several woodpeckers around 45 paces away. Go to this stump. At the stump look towards the hillside with the powerlines/poles on it. To the right you will see 3 pine trees on another hillside. (approx bearing 290 from magnetic north). Walk 16 paces towards these trees-- here you will find the first Gnome Home letterbox in a small stump covered by several rocks.
