Retired due to excessive ticks and poison ivy.

I collect old photos and postcards; I like using them to add whimsy to letterboxing. I have no idea who these people might be. Please know that I have incorporated these pictures in the spirit of enjoying and sharing life and mean no disrespect whatsoever. I lovingly chose particular images to coincide with the setting or mood of the letterboxes. I hope you enjoy!

Newtown Hill Conservation Area, Littleton, MA
This letterbox has 2 related boxes, but only one stamp (#2). The other 2 boxes are easy games best suited for families, but anyone will enjoy the whimsy of the hunt. Bring a ground cover and snack/meal to spread out while you do the activities. I would suggest viewing the map of this conservation area and reading about its history. Watch for poison ivy. The meadow grass gets quite tall; it is usually harvested in June.

Newtown Hill Conservation Area is on Newtown Road, near #579. The entry road is narrow and passes a paddock with a couple horses. There is a parking area and community garden with a water tower at the top of the hill.

1. Find the plaque on the water tower. Going clockwise, take 30 steps around the tower (passing 4 “ribs” of the tower). Turn to your left and take 10 steps toward a tree with several low, main branches. Look behind the tree and help compose a story about the enclosed photo. Be sure to walk to the rise of the hill and look around. On a clear day, you can see Boston.

2. With the water tower behind you, begin walking down hill in the meadow (Meadow #1), or down the road if grass is unusually tall. About two-thirds down the hill, the meadow will widen to your right. Keep going downhill. When you are just uphill from the parking lot, turn right and cross the meadow. You will see an opening in the woods. Look for a well-used trail (and a large break in the stone wall) into the woods-you also will notice water shining through the trees at the bottom of the meadow. Follow the path into the woods.

Notice the ferns along the left-hand side of the path. You will also see a variety of rusted farm objects. You will come to another meadow (Meadow #2). To your left is a small seasonal stream and a stone wall. Follow the meadow’s edge around to the right (counterclockwise), going uphill. At the top of the meadow, you will see 2 nesting boxes and a huge beech tree. With the meadow to your back, face the beech tree and look left. You will see a large rock pile. There is a largish, upright, squarish boulder on the edge of the pile; start there. Walk 12 steps counterclockwise around the pile. Look right. You will see another rock outcropping 12 steps away. Look behind it!
