The rangers pulled this one. I don't know if I'll submit the permits required or re-plant elsewhere.

Furnace Run is part of the Summit County Metroparks.

The park is just south of the Cuyahoga county line. Near where I-77 and Rt 21 cross. Enter the parks Brushwood Lake entrance on Townsend Rd. Once parked walk to the trailboard and pick up a map. You will be following the rock Creek path for 1.2 miles. The trail is marked with a yellow oak leaf. Head past the pavillion and stop to admire the lake, in the winter when it freezes you can ice skate there is even a fire to warm up by and the pond is lit! Back on the trail... Over the bridge and into the woods you go. Through the picnic area and towards the left you'll see the trail markers. Don't worry about clues for a while just enjoy the hike.

When you reach a picnic area with many types of pine trees begin to pay attention again. See to your right there are three picnic tables? Between the second and third tables there is a garbage can secured by trees that make a "V". Stand in front of these trees with your back to the picnic tables and garbage can. Look right. Look Left. To the left is a rather scruffy looking pine tree/bush? It's slightly different than the other ones in this clearing. At it's base under the needles you'll find your letterbox. The stamp is a depiction of where you'll end up at the end of your hike.

Continue on the trail you'll see a sign on your right for the Bog Iron Pond and ahead to your left is a drinking fountain and more picnic tables. Leave the path now and climb out to the grassy area. You are on top of the sledding hill. A great place to come in the winter. Not too steep for littles ones and long enough to ease the climbing back up! Head down the hill to the right to the parking lot or enjoy the other trail that loops you around the lake.
