Begin on the I-40 near Tucumcari, New Mexico. You can exit off of the I-40 at the 1st street exit (#332). Take 1st street into town to the first stoplight. At the light turn right onto Tucumcari Blvd. and follow this to the next stoplight where you will turn left onto U.S. 54. Stay on 54 for about 14 miles. Be on the lookout for a brown sign that says, “Ute Lake State Park, Mine Canyon.” Take the next left after this sign onto QR AC. Follow this road for about 3 or 4 miles until you arrive at the Pay Station. Behind this sign you will see a bathroom. Follow the sidewalk to the edge of the concrete, you should be facing east. Take 12 steps, turn right and you will see a pile of rocks with my box underneath. Be sure to bring your own stamp pad as the box does not contain one. Please recover well and take caution when looking for this box as it is a very popular spot during the summer, especially on weekends. Take care when in this area as it is also popular with rattlesnakes, spiders, and ants!
Feel free to enjoy the lake and the sun, but make sure to pay the day fee. I believe the fee for day use is 5 or 6 dollars per vehicle. Have Fun!
