This is part of BindleBabe’s continuing hobo series. For more information about this series, please see the Letterboxing_Bindlestiff yahoo group. This is a very short walk, once you locate the correct starting point.

CLUES:
One day, while they were walking along a back road, Leadbelly asked Mo’ Toes about other friends he had known. “Since I took up this ramblin’ life, you’ve been my best friend. But who did you hang with before I started free-wheelin’?”

Mo’ Toes explained “I had some other pals, but they decided the life was too hard. They decided to settle down for a while. One of em – I think it was Dirty Diedrich– had a purty funny sense of humor, so he suggested they all camp out and name the place “Hard Luck”, us bein’ no strangers to hard luck and all.” Leadbelly asked “What happened to them? Are they living a settled life now?” Mo Toes answered that he didn’t know, and maybe they should go visit his former friends.

They hopped the rails and journeyed to Gladwin County where Hard Luck was just a dot on the map. When they arrived, they found no settlement. Leadbelly looked around and said “I guess the homesteadin’ life wasn’t for those boys – they must have headed back out on the road.” They considered for a moment where the fellows might have gone. Mo Toes, who was not the fastest considerer in town, finally came up with an idea. “Old Dirty Diedrich always liked that town with the tulips when we were over on the west side of the state, and we come through a place that sounded like the same kind of folks might live there. Maybe they went there.”

The two men headed for this nearby village in search of Mo Toes’ old friends. They were disappointed to find no sign of them when they arrived. Growing weary after their long journey, they began to search for solace. “If only we could find a home with a kind lady who would feed us and let us rest a bit, wouldn’t that be fine?” They saw a street that sounded like it led to a lake, so they turned down that street. Immediately to the right, they saw a place where they could park a car – if only they had one. They wandered that way anyway, and found a trail. Being careful to listen for vehicles that didn’t stick to the roadway, they climbed up and down two very small hills. Then they looked to their left, and behind a 3-trunked tree (with another trunk behind), they found the kind lady they were seeking.

Thanks to BindleBabe, who provided the hobo stamp and the characters for the story. This was placed by TrailTroll on the day that the last county in Michigan finally got a letterbox.
