Take your best route to Bishop Hill. Once there, locate the Colony Cemetery site established in 1846. Ancient Cedars Arch over the entrance to this city of the dead. Walk among them counting in pairs. At the tenth pair, stop between them and line up with them. Do you see a grave stone to the right in the V of a cedar that says NORDEEN? If so, you are at the right place. Begin counting STEPS (not paces) and count 105.

This will take you past the Kelly and Tillman, Milford and Eva, Ericson and Gustophson, Clarence and Mendel, Ericson and Bowmen, Lock and Olson. All these people, all these Swedes – all this history.

There is a play done in this cemetery about the people that are buried here- The Bishop Hill web site will tell you more.

Have you counted 105 yet? If so, you should find Maud Smith Bergland – 105 years old. WOW!
Turn 180 degrees and find 14 holly leaves adorning a flaming torch that burns eternally for ARNQUIST. Near the A in Arnquist is your treasure. She is Santa Lucia. The flames in her hair glow every Christmas and she serves cookies and hot cider to visitors who come to Bishop Hill on Santa Lucia weekend. It is a celebration held the weekend closest to December 13th every year! This is a wonderful time of year to visit – The Nova Singers perform 4 Free concerts in the Colony Church that are not to be missed! I get goose bumps every time I here them. My family has made attending their concert a Christmas tradition. They sing so beautifully!

Please re-hide my angel well to guard the graves of this sacred place.
