The Turkey That Got Away

Every fall, my sleep in the pre-dawn and early morning hours is interrupted by the sound of rifles firing in the distance. At the time of the planting of this box, it is “birding season.” The box is a tribute to the “one” that got away.

Directions:

From Route 66 East or West, take Route 147 South, Baileyville Road, to the end. As the road splits (the road becomes one way at this point) stay to the left and take a left onto Route 147/157. You’ll see a small covered bridge on your right. At the stop sign take a right onto Strickland Road. Turn right into Peckham Park and park.

Clues:

Make your way to the Trolley Line Trail located on the left side of the park as you face the fields and past what appears to be a never used batting cage. If you come during the weekend when games are taking place, parking may be tight, but the games will not interfere with your boxing on the trail. As you enter the trail, there will be a pile of wood on your left. From the pile, take a reading of approximately 120*. Bushwhack 15 paces to a triple sister oak with an interesting Y-shaped tree just before it. The sisters protect the Turkey That Got Away. You can tell he had quite a run for it as his eyes are a little crossed.

Thanks to the Lions Club for creating and maintaining this trail. Don’t forget to look for other boxes in the park.
