Pieces of Eight…. Errrr… Five

THIS SERIES HAS BEEN RETIRED. THE STAMPS MAY BE RELEASED AS HITCHHIKERS. THANKS FOR ALL THE FINDERS AT THE GATHERING!!!

Location: Goddard Park, Warwick, RI
http://www.riparks.com/goddard.htm

These boxes will only be available through end of day November 17, 2007.

Park at the beach parking lot.
Clues start at the Picnic Shelter/Pavilion behind the Bath House.

Four of these are microboxes. The last box contains the series logbook. Bring your own inkpad, none provided.

A funny, just for fun, to get you started….
Q: What has 8 legs, 8 hands, and 8 eyes?
A: 8 pirates.

Box #1 A very piratical thing to say
Standing at the Picnic Shelter/Pavilion closest to the beach, cross over the bridge to the carousel building. Walk around the carousel to the side of the building opposite the bridge. See a handicap parking sign. Beyond that, see a large birch tree with three trunks. One trunk has a belly button with a stick hanging out of it. The stick is attached to the microbox, just pull it out carefully.

A joke to enjoy before you move along…
Q: What does a pirate say when he's having a heart attack?
A: Arrr! Me heartie!

Box #2 A piratical execution
Return over the bridge to the Pavilion. Turn to face the beach, there is a set of stone steps leading to the bathhouse. Walk down the steps. Walk past the tree in the circle, staying to its right side. See the red fence that begins on the right of the path. Half way between the first and second posts of this fence is your treasure, hanging in the top of the bush, near the fence rail.

Another one, just for fun, to make you groan…
Q: Why couldn't the pirates play cards?
A: The captain was standing on the deck!

Box #3 A piratical expression of surprise or strong emotion
Continue along the fence toward the beach. See the only set of wooden steps that goes down to the beach. Go down and then UNDER the steps. Clinging to the timbers and screws is your next prize.

Q: What goes thump-thump Arr!, thump-thump Arr!?
A: A pirate falling down the stairs!

Box #4 Typical way for a pirate leader to address his crew
And now, Me Hearties, climb back up the stairs, go back to where box #2 is hiding in the bushes. Take a right…. See a trailhead bulletin board sign near the woods. Go to the sign. Starting from the sign, go 14 paces (2 steps = 1 pace) into the woods on the trail… beach will be at your right. At 14 paces see a tree on the right that has a red XC triangle about 7 feet up. On the ground, in the leaves right past the tree is a fence post lying down. The microbox is in the first rail hole…packed with some leaves so muggles don’t notice it. After stamping, be sure to rehide with leaves packed in.

First sailor: I know a pirate with a wooden leg named Smith!
Second sailor: What's the name of his other leg?

Box #5 A general piratical expression of glee
On to the last stamp and Me Captain Log. From the tree with the red triangle, go 40 paces (or 80 steps, whichever you prefer!) along the trail; beach will be on your right. At 40 paces see a white painted XC on the tree on the left of the trail. Continue 25 paces along the trail. See 3 trees on the left, 2 are stuck together. If you turn and look back along the trail you will see CL’s heart on a tree, so you must be in the right place! Savvy? Turn into the woods from the three trees. Go about 36 steps into the woods, among the many down trees. You will see a short-ish trunk laying parallel to the trail. Good hiding place for a box in the hollow end to your right…. But OOPS… it already belongs to a geocache! (Stop and enjoy the geocache if you’d like). To the right of the geocache, see a long downed tree, you are at the branches end of the tree…. Go about 14 steps to the roots end of the tree. AH, another hollowed out area! Inside find the final stamp and the logbook.

And finally….
Q: Did you hear about the pirate who took up boxing?
A: He had a killer left hook!
