Chester Changeable Box #5: Chester
Well, summer is upon us, and I’m going to be working on a few other projects. Therefore, this box will be here...approximately until Labor Day.
Has anyone ever carved a stamp to go with an ink pad? I was starting to think about a patriotic stamp for July, when I found a red, silver, and blue pigment ink pad! I had to buy it of course, though I usually stay away from heavy duty pigment. As I type this, I’ve just baked a shrinky dink for first finder, and the ink is still wet!! My apologies to whomever gets it! I don’t suppose the humidity is helping.
And so, with appropriate pride in town and country, I present a tribute to Chester.
I should note that Purple Penguin and I try to sing something patriotic every year at our church on the Sunday closest to July 4. This year we’ll be singing “Chester”, by William Billings. The first verse:
Let tyrants shake their iron rods,
and slav’’ry clank her galling chains.
We fear them not, we trust in God,
New England’s God forever reigns.
Directions:
The West End Cemetary (that's how it's spelled in the sign!) in Chester is on Cedar Lake Rd., just off Route 148, overlooking Cedar Lake. Just past the cemetery is a parking place--if it’s available, park there!
At the opening in the wall next to the parking place, stand on the flat rock and take a bearing of 163° to the far side. If you don’t happen to have a compass, walk along the lake side of the cemetery until you see Gertrude Jagger. Just after that, look for a split tree. While I said the box was child friendly, at least one person in the group must be at least 5'1"--the box (actually a camo pouch) was placed up in the tree by me, and I may have overstretched a bit!
Feel free to take it back to your car to stamp in comfort, then replace carefully--don't want you or the letterbox to end up in the lake! As always, use discretion and log your finds!
Happy Independence Day & Happy Summer!
