Sept 2012 - looks like these are both gone. Still a neat cemetery to check out tho'.

12/11/11 - Just got a note that the caretakers found and removed the "box" by mistake and will be returning it. Not only that but we have some new letterboxers. Not sure which one they mean tho'. Thanks to the caretakers and, to everyone else, be mindful of the cemetery and the walls.

Dec. 2011 - Looks like these two are gone but, on the positive side, seems like they may be maintaining the cemetery better.

This PUD and its bonus box is in a cemetery at the intersection of Rt 161 and Rt 85 in the Chesterfield section of Montville. Traveling North on 161, the entrance is on the right just before the sign for the traffic light 500 ft. ahead. There’s also a No Admittance After Dark sign but it’s not as obvious. Go up this “road” and park where the road splits. You will be able to turn around here but do it cautiously.

There is no sign for this cemetery and my research on-line yielded one reference to a Chesterfield Baptist Cemetery at this intersection. I wasn’t able to find any other information. This is by far the most overgrown cemetery we’ve come across (and we explore 3-4 for every one where we plant a box). It’s a fairly large one and the stones we could see were from the 19th century. There may be earlier ones but without a weed whacker or machete we didn’t want to look too far. Although the cemetery appeared to be bounded by a good stone wall, we spared you that, and the bush whacking to get to it.

Clues to boxes: Walk in to the mown section of the cemetery paralleling Rt. 161 to the monument to Corpl William Tooker, CoC 26 Inf, Conn Vols. Then go back 6 steps and look in the wall for the little daisy #61. Cover well but watch out for ants.

For box 2 go back to where the road split. Go to the tree in the island. From the tree, walk straight across the road to the wall. Look in the bottom for Things that Go Bump in the Night (and Day). This one was picked for the “road” into the cemetery. Be sure it’s covered from both sides.
