A Rose for Popcorn

FROM ALL REPORTS>>MOST LIKELY MISSING!!

Planted by the lazy letterboxer, July 20, 2008
Quabbin Reservoir, Gate 40, Petersham, MA
Gate 40 is located on Rte32A, south off of Rte 122
This letterbox is dedicated to Asa “Popcorn” Snow, an eccentric resident of the former town of Dana, MA. Dana was one of the 4 towns flooded to form the Quabbin Reservoir, the main water source for Boston and its surrounding towns. Asa, a vegetarian, existed on a diet of milk and popcorn, hence the nickname. He had a morbid fear of being buried alive and had a casket constructed for himself out of metal with a glass window over where his head would lie. He instructed the undertaker that for 7 days following his death his casket was to be checked to be certain that he was dead. On the third day following his entombment there was an impassable snowstorm and his widow excused the undertaker from his obligation. When the towns were flooded to form the reservoir, 7500 graves were re-located, 6500 of them were reburied at Quabbin Park Cemetery.
To find the letterbox go to Quabbin Gate 40 on Route 32A in Petersham. The gate with the sign is set off from the road a bit but look for a break in the guardrail with G40 spray-painted in red, that’s where you want to turn. Walk in along the paved road a short distance to the kiosk on the right. There is a trail just to the side of the kiosk, follow that a short distance and look for the remains of Popcorn’s tomb on the left. Walk up to the former tomb and look to the right up a slight hill to some large rocks. A Rose for Popcorn is in a ledge, under one of the rocks, sheltered by a piece of bark. Please re-hide well.
It is said that years after his death in 1872 the door to the tomb was opened and village children would dare each other to sneak up there with a flashlight to look at Popcorn’s face.
