Message to Webmasters,

From: Ann:

Message:
I found a ruined letterbox labeled North River Leaf peeper Letterbox Scituate.
Either animals or tide had destroyed the contents. I kept the stamp in case the
owner wants it back. She/he can email me if so.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO STARTING POINT:

This letterbox is located in Scituate, MA on the North River marsh (specifically, the Herring Brook estuary that feeds the North River). It was placed here on 9/7/08 by “The Black Cats” letterboxing team from Scituate: Chris, Sue, Danny, and Maggie. We've located letterboxes all throughout the South Shore and Cape Cod, and wanted to start our own. A compass is not entirely necessary, but is recommended, and adds to the sense of adventure for kids. Hope you have fun. Make time to have lunch at The Mill Wharf restaurant after your hunt. Enjoy!

From the rotary intersection of Route 3A and Route 123 in Scituate, take the rotary exit marked “Scituate Harbor”. This road is also called “The Driftway”. Follow The Driftway past the Dunkin' Donuts on the right for about 1/4 mile. As soon as you see the Widows Walk Golf Course on your left, look to your right. There will be a parking lot next to the marsh land. This parking lot is for hiking and boat launching into the Herring Brook. Park your car. Your hunt begins from here.

CLUES TO THE “NORTH RIVER LEAF PEEPER” LETTRBOX:

* Pass through the two large stone pylons next to the steel gate.

* Begin by finding the concrete bench with the engraving, “A.J. Memorial Trail” bench.

* Enter the trail head, keeping the water on your right until the trail becomes more tree-covered...follow the trail for approximately another 150 feet.

* You'll come to a striped bass in the middle of the trail. Face in the same direction that the fish is swimming and walk a short distance, looking for a rusty, old, buckshot-riddled sign on the right.

* This old sign marks the beginning of a new, sandy trail. Follow this trail up a small hill.

* At the top of the sandy hill, the path will fork three ways, continue soft left [not hard left], and go back down the hill.

* Another 50 ft., and the trail will open up to a desert-like landscape; lots of low-lying brush.

* From here, your general walking direction will be due East (or 95-degrees via compass).

* Follow this w-i-d-e sandy path until you get to a crossroads...continue straight.

* Eventually, you'll see the second rusty ol' buckshot-riddled sign on the right.

* In just a short distance, you'll pass through an open, sandy clearing before the path narrows and becomes more tree-covered. Your walking direction is now SSE. Continue walking on this narrower path for approximately 6 minutes at normal, adult pace.

* After 6 minutes, the path will begin to open up to reveal the North River marshscape. The packed mud trail will fork left and right...stay left.

* Continue another 200 – 250 ft. around a long, slow right-hand bend.

* Halfway around this bend, you'll see a cluster of 4 cedar trees, the letterbox is at the base of the tree nearest the trail.

P.S., To "Grammy & Bumper", we're big fans of of yours!
