We adopted this box on 11/10/11. It was originally placed on 6/14/03 by Sammy Chamois. The second box has not been logged as found since 2009, and the landscape has changed so much since it was planted that we can't be sure if it's there or not. The original clue is below, with brackets around the one notation I made.

This is a fee area in the summer season. During the off season, you can just park and hike in.

ORIGINAL CLUE

Wells State Park is located in south central Massachusetts.
From the east or west: Follow the Massachusetts Turnpike (Rte. I-90) to exit 9 (Sturbridge). Follow Rte 20 East to the intersection with Rte. 49. Turn left onto Rte. 49 North. The Park entrance is the third left off Rte. 49.
From Connecticut: Take Rte. 84 North to Exit 3A and the intersection with Rte. 20 East. Follow Rte. 20 East to the intersection with Rte. 49. Turn left onto Rte. 49 North. The Park entrance is the third left off Rte. 49.

Drive into the park and and park your car in the lot by the ranger station. Hike into the park and bear right following the sign for Mill Pond Trail. You'll be going up a slight hill and pass the interpretive center on the left. Continue on the main paved road downhill and you'll soon pass a sign for the Mill Pond Accessible trail.

The road bends to the right and you'll continue uphill a short distance. At the intersection, turn RIGHT. The main road will continue to the left and you'll also see a trail in front of you, but you'll want to take a right here. Proceed past the yellow metal posts and continue on this paved road for about 1/8 of a mile.

The road turns into a stone trail ahead of you to the left side. Continue down this stone path and you'll soon cross over a small stream. At the fork in the trail, turn left. (Just before you head down this path, look down at your feet and notice a rock with a white arrow painted on it pointing toward you.) *[A recent finder told me that this arrow is no longer there. When I visited the box on 11/12/11 to make repairs and check the clues I did not see it either - however the trail was covered with fallen leaves. - Crazy Treehuggers]*

Follow this trail past a small waterfall and stream on your left. When you get to an open field with power lines, stop and listen carefully for the creepy power buzzing noise. Now look to your right and find the pole marked A-301 212. Standing at the base of this pole, proceed at 180 degrees over a long rock and find your prize hidden in the wall directly in front of you. It will be in the middle of the top horizontal face of the wall under a few rocks.

Stamp in and go back the way you came in past the stream and waterfall (now on your right). Back at the fork in the trail (with the arrow rock and where you came in from the right), now turn left and continue on Mill Pond Trail. Soon you will pass a large tree on the left side of the trail, almost in the trail itself, and continue as the path winds downward.

Next, you'll pass between two straight trees like pillars on either side of the trail. Continue further and you'll soon see some water on your right. When you come to a small bridge, cross it and notice the 4-trunked tree to your right. Standing at its base, find the largest tree along 230 degrees and about 30 feet away. Bushwack to the large tree and you will find the Wells II letterbox under some stones at the base of the tree.

Stamp in, get back on the trail, and continue on in the direction you were going in (NOT back over the bridge). Now simply follow the trail over a bridge until it eventually joins the main road you walked in on. Turn left on the paved road and head back to your car. Don't forget to stop by the interpretive center if its open.

Send me an e-mail and let me know how you made out. Good luck!
