Broadlands Holiday Tour - Fall

Update 9/5/09 - Planted Labor Day box today. Checked on Halloween box - still in place. Forgot to check on Thanksgiving box.

These stamps were originally part of the Happy Holiday box in which I changed out the stamp for different holidays. I have decided to permanently plant these.

These letterboxes are located in Stream Valley Park in Broadlands, VA. From Rte. 7, take Claiborne Pkwy. south. Make a right on Vestal’s Gap Drive. Shortly after you turn, there will be a white crosswalk painted on the street. Park right around there.

Take the path on the side of the street that heads toward Forest Folly, (not Oak Tree Grove). You will pass a gazebo on the left. Keep on the path heading toward Robin’s Ring.

Kids – play on the playground at Robin’s Ring.
Adults – sit on the bench and listen for robins and other birds.

Keep on the path heading toward Native Tree Park. Go over one bridge. At the T go left (in the opposite direction from the North Playground.) Cross another bridge and take a right at the Y into Native Tree Park. There are many informational signs posted.

Labor Day

Close enough to fall for my purposes! Read the informational signs. While reading one of them, you may be confused as to whether they are talking about nature, or perhaps an orchestra, Gothic cathedral, or a minister. At this sign, head into the woods. Pass the hip-high diabase rock. Stand on the “path” in between this rock and the large tree beyond. Look to your left. Find the large flat diabase rock which is diagonally over/next to another pretty large diabase rock. Looking at the rocks with the adjacent tree to your left, you will find the Labor Day box under the right side of the larger rock, behind some sticks. (This box is large enough for a small HH. The others are not.)

Halloween

Find the sign informing you about the igneous rocks. While reading, look into the woods and see a large tree. Behind that tree is a diabase rock. Here you will find the original spot for the Happy Holidays letterbox and the permenant home of the Halloween box.

Thanksgiving - (confirmed missing 3/25/10)

Find the sign exhorting you to use one of your senses other than sight to experience the aquatic charms of the area. Look around nearby and find a skinny 4-sister tree. From this tree, look in the direction of the road. About 10 steps away is a log lying on the ground among some brush. Under the end of the log on the side closest to you under some bark is the Thanksgiving box.
