A new-ish box on a roughly 3-mile hike in the Kitchel Wilderness Preserve (hunting forbidden). When our search for some older boxes only turned up empty or in ruins, what did we do? Plant, of course! Originally intended as a Duc's Fanclub box, it just felt right to plant it here instead, so here goes:

DIRECTIONS: From Winsted, CT, take CT Rte. 8 north into Colebrook. Watch for a lumber yard on your left and take Sandy Brook Road on the left immediately following. Park in a dirt pulloff 1.1 miles on the right after your turn. Enough room for multiple vehicles.

DIFFICULTY: 2 (of 5)
TERRAIN: 3.25 (of 5)

CLUE: Bring black ink, and color in the spaces with crayons later. From the parking area, there is a trail at either end, both blazed white, both heading uphill. You can reach the box either way, but we recommend the trail on the right. Many blazes are old and faded, so keep your eyes peeled, as many of the turns on white lacked the standard double-blaze. We actually wandered upon two beautiful old stone cellar-holes near one of these relatively unmarked turns. If you happen upon them, you just missed a right turn! Orange joins white from the left (where it reaches Frey's Cliff/Vista - worth the rugged side trip if you have time).

Stay straight on white for a more direct route, although orange branches right for a more circuitous route to the box (pick up clues where orange meets yellow in next paragraph). White will eventually end (turn back downhill, really) at a double-blazed hemlock, from which you turn right to continue on yellow (painted over blue - you may still see an occasional blue blaze the painters missed).

Continuing on yellow, you will soon cross a stream (beautiful today - lots of frogs!) and then pass between boulders on both sides of the trail. Shortly, the trail splits - go right to stay on yellow. Pass the end of the orange blazed trail on the right (marked with a large arrow), continuing on yellow. Watch for a six-sister tree on the right side of the trail. Shortly after this tree, skirt around a large fallen tree and eventually reach the split between the yellow Explorer Trail on the right, and the blue-blazed Retreat Trail to the left, marked with a dark-blue R. Take the solid blue left and gently uphill, and look for a large moss-covered boulder on the right side of the trail. Shortly after this, you will see a boulder-strewn hillside on the right with a small tree on the top. Turn to the opposite side of the trail, where you will see a snagged two-sister fallen tree. Bushwhack up this bank. At its crest, you will see a medium fallen tree pointing downhill away from you. In the right side of its root end, behind debris and a stone, you will find out how Sandra Boynton recommends you Be Like a Duc!

As for getting back to the car, retrace your steps to white - whichever white you choose - either by yellow or orange, unless you have other adventures planned.
