*****THIS BOX IS BEING REPAIRED AND WILL BE REPLACED SOON***
This box is planted in honor of our dad/grandpa’s 60th birthday. We put it in the Pawling Nature Reserve, a special place that he has visited since he was 14 years old. The stamp represents one of his passions.

Clues: Easy
Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Wear sturdy shoes and beware of severe drop offs!
Access: Public and free. Pets not allowed.

To get to the Pawling Nature Reserve, which is set aside by the Nature Conservancy, travel north on Rt. 22 in Pawling. Turn east (right) on North Quaker Hill Road (Route 68). Bear right at the “Y” and continue for approximately 1 mile. Then make a left onto Quaker Lake Road. Go 1.5 miles to a small parking lot on the left. (You will have passed the lake). There is a sign that says “Nature Conservancy.”

Head off on the trail, going over the plank foot bridge up the hill to the trail sign. Sign in at the map/register station and study the trail map. The letterbox is planted on the yellow trail. After finding it, you can turn back, or you can continue on the white trail, and pick up the red trail, which will loop back down to the yellow trail again, making a large circle. If you have young children in your group, this may be too long for them. Information is not included here about the white or red trails.

DANGER. After signing in at the trail, keep children with you! Approximately 150 steps ahead on the trail, you will come to a cliff overlooking a stream. After enjoying the view, bear left on the trail, following the yellow trail markers on the trees. You will go down a slight hill and over a foot bridge. Continue along the trail up the hill. The giant “clam” rock on the right is a great picture opportunity. Then continue up the hill where you will see a “cactus” tree on the right. The trail will turn right around a rock pile, where you will see a “spiny” tree on the right. Straight ahead, you will see a giant “peeled” tree with rotted trees at its base. Past this tree, find the first tree marked with a yellow trail marker. Look directly to your right and you will see a large uprooted tree. Go to the tree (this is off the trail). At the base of the tree is a flat rock. Underneath it, you should find the letterbox.

Please replace the box the way you found it. Please let us know about your experience, and whether or not the box is in good condition.
