Castle Island was originally an island, but in 1928 was connected by a concrete causeway to the mainland in South Boston. Fort Independence is one of the oldest fortified military sites in the country. The first fort was built in 1643. It was rebuilt after being burned by the British in the Revolutionary War and was commanded by Paul Revere. It has also been used as a state prison and a hospital. The present fort was reconstructed in 1851.

I love this place. If you have never been to Castle Island, this is your opportunity. It is situated in South Boston, on the harbor front, with outstanding views of Boston harbor, East Boston and Logan International Airport. It is an extremely popular spot for the locals who come to swim, fish, sunbath, walk around the fort and enjoy clams or ice cream at Sullivan's. There is a wonderful playground for children and an enclosed beach area with a separate walkway called "The sugarbowl". Castle Island is maintained by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation as a historic site and is open year-round, although the Fort is open only in the summer, with tours conducted by the Castle Island Association. Be sure to get another stamp at the Fort's entrance, in the mounted box next to the brochures, when the Fort is open to the public.

To find the Fort Independence - Castle Island letterbox you need to get off I 95 at exit 15 at Columbia Road and head east a short distance to the rotary and go 1/2 way around onto Day Boulevard. Follow Day Boulevard all the way to the end (about 3 miles, keeping the waterfront on your right) to the parking area at Castle Island. You can't miss it...you can't go any further and the Fort will be in front of you. Park here and grab an ice cream or clams at Sullivans.

Head counter clock wise around the Fort, staying on the lower, outer paved walkway that circles the Fort. (There is an upper walkway that also circles the Fort but for my clues it is easier to give directions from the lower walkway.) You will pass a beach on your right, below the guardrail, a bathroom facility on your left, the playground on your right and further on a few military monuments and a firefighter memorial as well. (If you go in the summer, you can take the left up the hill to the Fort entrance and do a tour and get the other stamp now, or wait until you are done and return here after.) Keep walking along the walkway and you will come to the harbor. Enjoy the views and fresh ocean air. You will walk past an oblisk type monument on your left and the fishing pier on your right. Pay close attention as you pass this area and notice the pilings in the water. As the walkway turns to the left away from the harbor, you will notice 3 benches, to the right of the walkway, with a few stairs leading down to them. Walk down these stairs, past the stone that reads Dahill, to the last stone, near the fence with a red door. You can non-challauntly sit on the last stone, look down and to the right of this red door and spot the black stone on the ground, leaning against the fence. Your prize is under the fence behind this stone. PLEASE BE DISCREET!!! THIS IS AN EXTREMELY OPEN AND POPULAR AREA. It can be done, with stealth and caution; after all, I did hide it successfully. You can stamp in here or use the benches and sit and enjoy the view. (When I was about 12, my brothers and I made a raft and floated around the water within the pilings you see before you, until the cops came and made us get out, kill-joys that they were lol.) Please be sure to tuck this in, under the fence, and cover with the rock when you are done.

Hope you enjoy this place as much as I do. You can now return to the walkway and continue on to your car or back around again to the Fort entrance and a tour.
