Visit the gorgeous North Rim Grand Canyon Lodge and enter through the main entrance. Stop to marvel at all the stone and log construction and the beautiful Native American artwork.
Continue straight thru the lobby into the breath taking Sun Room outfitted with lovely leather couches and guarded by "Brady the Donkey". The huge glass windows allow one to drink in the beauty and majesty of the Grand Canyon North Rim! How minuscule we all are! Relax and absorb!
Ready for a walk to find Mandy’s Spirit Southwest? Go out the West door and across the chair-covered western terrace to the end.
Step down the 40 plus steps to the Transept Trail and continue along the Westward Rim. Another 40 strides (or so) brings you to an observation area jetting over the canyon…for the brave of heart, like Mandy!
Continue on the Rim Trail and you will soon cross a bridge with a sign reading Grand Canyon & Kaibab Trails. You will see the Frontier Log Cabins up the hill on your right.
After a few up and down slopes in the trail, you are at a shaded area where a large rock jets out over the trail on your right. To the left of this rock is a gulley and a small tree reaching upward.
Under the right side of the large boulder you will find “Mandy’s Spirit Southwest” tucked behind four stones.
Enjoy your ‘boulder desktop’ and the Ponderosa Pine shading you - as you ‘stamp’ and read what others have had to say!
Be sure to step to your left and right on the trail to observe the canyon views.
If you cut your hike short here and climb up the gulley to the left of “Mandy’s Boulder’ and bear right as you reach the Frontier Cabins you will find Cabin #90 and to your left and Cabin #82 to your right.
‘Hope you enjoy your very short jaunt from the North Rim Lodge and that your breath was taken away by the gorgeous views.
If you are ever on the East Coast – and letter boxing on Block Island, Rhode Island…find the original Mandy’s Spirit at Harbor Beach.
