NOTE – A new, very unfriendly “Private Drive” sign has been posted at this entrance. Until I find out more I suggest using a different entrance to the trails. Thanks to The Tendler Tribe for the heads up on this.(6-23-2013)

This is a nice walk around a pretty Beaver Pond. Enjoy the scenery.

Find the gate at the end of Isaiah Smith Lane in Morris. (Go south on Route 63 from the center of Litchfield. Just after White Flower Farm turn left on Isaiah Smith Lane) Walk around the gate to a clearing and intersection. To walk the loop turn right at the intersection and follow the gravel road.

A scenic alternative is to go straight and follow the trail at the edge of the pond, over the stone dam and then over an earthen dam. This will lead you around to the right where you will find a couple of options to join the gravel road.

You will see blue and white trail blazes. You want to end up going North on the gravel road and following white blazes.

The first part has nice views of the pond. Later, watch for a Y in the road. Take the left and follow the green blazes. Very quickly you will come to a T intersection. Follow the sign directions and turn left back to the pond. The green trail will end at a T next to the pond. Turn left and follow the road to an overlook.

At the overlook look left to see a toppled stone pier. Walk along its left side and turn left again near the end. Take about seven steps and find yourself between a nice sitting stone and a two inch diameter tree. Look under the stone for your letters. Please re-hide carefully since this is a popular spot.

Take the trail back to the end of the green trail but this time go straight across, keeping the pond on your left. The road curves right to an intersection where you will go left on white. Follow this along the pond. You will be joined by a blue trail so it will be blue and white back to the intersection where you started. This loop is about 1.3 miles.

An alternative is to turn left at the first intersection. It is about a mile up and back along the road.
