Pete the Pelican Letterbox

(Pete is missing as of 3/12/2004. I will re-carve and re-hide before the pelicans return in the fall of 2007. Stay tuned...)

Although the brown pelican is the state bird of Louisiana, you won’t find them around Baton Rouge. The University Lakes at LSU, though, are winter home to the spectacularly beautiful white pelican.

White pelicans show up when they want to -- and not a moment sooner, says J.V. Remsen, curator of birds at the Museum of Natural Science at LSU. "Some years, they're conspicuous around the lake, and some years, they're no-shows," Remsen said. "Nobody knows why."

The white pelicans stay the winter in Louisiana after coming from the central and western United States or from Canada. Populations vary between 50 and 300 birds. If you visit the lakes at other times, you might not catch a glimpse of any white pelicans outside the letterbox, but you will see all manner of other birds at any time of the year.

Check out famed Louisiana photojournalist C.C. Lockwood’s photo of the pelicans at the LSU Lakes at http://www.cclockwood.com/gallery/unlimited_prints/pelicans_LSU_lakes.htm.

To find Pete the Pelican:

Enjoy a scenic drive, walk or jog around one or more of the lakes near the LSU campus. Sooner or later, you will reach Baton Rouge Beach. Near the beach are two small piers. One of the piers has steps leading up; the other has a ramp. Go to the pier with steps. Sit on the second step from the bottom. Taking care not to be observed by any of the many joggers, sunbathers, studiers, etc. who frequent the area at all hours in all weather, feel beneath the bottom step toward the center for Pete’s “nest.” For maximum discretion, take the box to your car or to a picnic table for stamping in.

This box can be a drive-up. I’ve made the clues straightforward since the real challenge for this box is getting it in and out undetected!

Happy hunting!
