WALK YOUR DOG LETTERBOX
In the hot days of Summer, you can still find a cool place to walk your dog in the Mason District National Wildlife Refuge, it is 18 miles South of Washington DC.
Travel South on Interstate 95 in Virginia, take exit 163 (Lorton) turn left on Lorton, right on Armistead then right on route 1 turn left on Gunston Rd and go about 4 miles. The refuge shares a common entrance with Mason Neck State Park (High Point Rd.) Bear right on high Point Rd, drive to the Woodmarsh trail parking lot. Park and begin walking South/West on the trail (that’s the same direction you were driving on High Point Rd.)
After a quarter mile walk on the paved bike path, you pass a 2.0 mile marker, 80 yards beyond is a biking ‘DOWNHILL’ sign. Stop there, turn around and retrace your steps 43 paces, there is a medium sized tree on your left. In the base of the twisted trunk you will find the WALK YOUR DOG letterbox.
The day we planted this box, we saw our first wildlife on the trail, it was a white tail deer, so keep your dog on a leash, even a well trained dog will chase a deer into the forest and get lost.
* One last point: depending on the weather, you may want to use bug repellant, mosquitos can be awful in the humid forest.

Hike length: 0.5 miles
