**** Part of the historic schoolhouses of Texas Series

The school is located down the road some, but the cemetery is much more interesting. From the reports about the cemetery, I guessing the church that was across the roadway has been torn down. Here is some history on the school, and the cemetery.

The two-room school at St. Mary's was a Rosenwald School. The Rosenwald Schools played a significant role in the black communities of the South (See Hopewell School box for more details). Built in 1925 - 26, it is now the St. Mary's Colony Community Center, and seems to have had some changes, though few, and probably new siding. The cemetery is quite old, and overgrown, but would be fun to explore.

Directions:
From Hwy 21 and Hwy 130 intersection, go east on Hwy 21 about 5 miles. Look for sign for St Mary's Rd, and turn right on this dirt road. Go over a mile or two until reach water tower on left. You should see cement stair on left (which was probably to the church). Look right and you should see the cemetery gates. park

To the Letterbox:
Walk through the entry gate and go to the right brick entry column. Box is at base, under rock pile.

Hike length: 0.1 miles
