STAMP MISSING 6/17/2010
Alive and well 5/10/04

Steep trail but short hike (less than half mile).
Not good for strollers or wheelchairs.

In 1900 Elmer Riggs was working at the Chicago Field Museum. He was told by a Dr. Bradbury that ranchers around Grand Junction were picking up dinosuar bones in their pastures. They ended up finding a huge Brachyosaurus bone on a hill outside of town.
One century later and the rest of the bones have disappeared, but something else might be hidden on Riggs Hill.
To find Riggs Hill go south on Grand Street. About 3 miles after crossing the river turn left at a light onto South Broadway(Monument). In one mile you will see the trailhead on the right.
From the kiosk walk 63 steps west on a level trail, then take the trail that cuts up the hill at 330 degrees. At the top there is a wooden shade structure. From here take the trail that heads 40 degrees. At 35 steps the trail turns slightly right and in 30 more it turns left. From where the trail turns left you will see a boulder 22 steps off the trail at 80 degrees with a bushy ephedra on it's north side. On the southwest side of the boulder, in a vertical fissure, about waist high, an arm's length in, under some rocks is what you seek.
After stamping enjoy the view of Grand Mesa at 70 degrees, Sentinel Spire at 275 degrees and the Grand Valley to the north.
