You won’t find much in Ranchester, Wyoming. But if you’re looking for cows or coal, those we have. You won’t have any problem spotting the cattle as you drive by, but coal industry is a little less visible these days. (If coal towns that aren't there anymore excite you, you can drive along the nearby interpretive Black Diamond Trail.) Coal and cows have something in common in Wyoming: they’re both sometimes transported by Burlington Northern Santa Fe trains, and the BNSF line passes right through Ranchester. To find this letterbox, you’ll be stopping at a BNSF caboose in Ranchester.

Find the Municipal Building/library in Ranchester and the BNSF caboose parked beside it. This is located on the north side of town, immediately on your right as you enter town from the north (I-90) or on your left as you’re leaving Ranchester if you’ve approached from the south. The building and caboose are easily visible from Highway 14 and pretty hard to miss. You can park behind the library right beside the caboose.

Go to the side of the caboose facing away from the library. Find the northern-most steps on this side (the ones closest to basketball court). On the backside of the vertical plate between the top step and the deck of the caboose you'll find the letterbox attached with magnets. You can reach under from the end of the caboose to retrieve it.

Please replace as found and enjoy (your drive through) Ranchester! There's a visitors' information center adjacent to the library (red depot-looking building) that is open seasonally if you need a bathroom or information.
