Terrain Difficulty: Moderate (moderate slope, 4 miles RT)
Status: alive
The Grizzly Gulch Trail offers a scenic approach to the summit of Handies Peak (14,048') that ascends the Grizzly Gulch valley and then climbs the north ridge of Handies Peak to the summit. You do not have to go all the way to the summit to get this box, but I highly recommend it, especially this time of year when Aspen trees are a beautiful shade of yellow.
Directions:
Take Hwy 149 south for 2.5 miles and turn right on CR 30 toward Lake San Cristobal. Follow the paved road about 4.0 miles then bear right on gravel road for 12.6 miles to Grizzly Gulch Trail on left.
Clues:
Find Grizzly Gulch Trail behind restrooms and walk on it across bridge and through forest to final clearing with only a few trees around and Handies Peak straight ahead. Look right for a large square boulder about 50 yards away, then find a lone pine tree just 12 steps to right of trail. LB is at its back base under rocks.
Hike length: 3-5 miles
