This letterbox is based on the music video for Vance Joy’s 2013 song “Riptide,” where metaphorical song lyrics are acted out literally. The “Cowboy Running from Himself” stamp depicts the cowboy who is, literally, chasing himself down a hill in a Western setting.
The video can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ_1HMAGb4k
Driving Directions (Note, this is for the parking lot on Old Auga Fria Road, not the smaller parking lot on Arroyo Hondo Drive): Drive south on Old Pecos Trail until it dead ends. (You will pass over I-25.) Turn left on to E. Old Agua Fria Road, which is a well-maintained dirt road, suitable for low clearance vehicles. Drive 0.75 miles and turn right into the parking lot for the Arroyo Hondo Open Space parking lot. Park and head to the trailhead.
Proceed up the path, and continue straight at the first junction (about 100 yards from the parking lot). The trail will crest the hill, and about 150 yards past the crest is a sign with a left arrow marking the trail. Just past this sign is a second junction with a map sign.
From the map sign, look to the west. There is a large pinion tree, with a medium-sized pinon to the right of it. Just beyond these two trees is a pinon with a yucca directly under it. The box is under a couple of rocks next to the yucca. In total, the box is about 30 steps from the map sign when walking between the two trees.
Hike length: 1 mile
