Distance/Terrain: fairly easy walk on sandy/dirt trail, some small hills. ~0.6 miles round trip (30 minutes)

Note: Daily fee or annual state park pass required to visit park.

Martini Man & I have always enjoyed the annual Tucson letterboxing events, but this year we decided to cancel attending only a few days before the event. The theme for the 16th Annual Event was “Leaping thru 2020”. Unfortunately something dangerous was leaping around the world in 2020 and we didn’t want to risk meeting it at the event.

However we were very happy to visit the park a week later to find the numerous boxes that had been planted for the event. Although we live fairly near the park, we had only been on a few of the trails before. But hunting for the boxes gave us the opportunity to explore more of the park while collecting a nice assortment of stamp images. We were grateful for the event hosts and all the people that carved stamps!

While we were there, we placed a box to commemorate why we missed the event. In keeping with current practice, this box is “socially distant” from the other boxes. It has actually been quarantined to the opposite side of the park!

If you’re brave enough to hunt for this lethal leaper, go to the parking lot on the west side of the park, on American Avenue, just south of the intersection with Hwy 77. There is a short road from American Avenue into the parking lot. Note that a daily fee or park pass is required.

Make your way to the trail kiosk and then south to the first trail intersection. Follow the trail of the virus as it headed toward the AZ Trail. Wind your way down to the wash (and don’t forget to wash your hands often!). Cross the wash and continue towards the ranch house. When you see “CAUTION” you know you are getting near the menacing danger. Proceed carefully to the center of the intersection and look south to spot a large boulder. Take the trail a bit further to loop around and then adjust your mask and make your way to the highest end of the boulder with a concave top. Get out your instruments and take a bearing of 70° to spot a cluster of smaller boulders about 10 steps away. The lethal leaper has settled in at the top, hiding under some smaller rocks.

Replace the box well, retrace your steps to return and stay healthy!

If you hunt for this box, we'd appreciate an email message to let us know how the box is doing and how YOU are doing. Thanks!
