Difficulty: Moderate
Distance to Letterbox: 5.4 miles RT
Treasure Lakes hike is excellent. You get to enjoy views of South Lake on the way up, then great mountain views, then reach Lower Treasure Lake...pretty. If you go to letterbox, be sure to go a few more steps up this trail to see another lake. You can continue on to upper Treasure lake, but must cross the stream to do so.
Directions:
From Bishop and Hwy 395, go west on Line Street (Hwy 168) for 15 miles. Turn left on South Lake road and go 7.1 miles to end of road and parking/trailhead.
To the Letterbox:
Follow the trail along the South Lake as you climb to a trail jct at .8 miles, go right to Treasure Lakes. Continue up until you reach Lower Treasure Lake. Go to far end of lake. You will see a unmarked trail going off to the left. Take that for 65 steps to view of second lake at a granite step. Look right to clump of trees with dead limb to the right. Box is at base of the dead limb and little trees, under a large rock.
Hike length: 5-8 miles
