At 13,161 feet above sea level, Wheeler Peak is the highest mountain in New Mexico and ranks as the 8th state in order of elevation. It is named for U.S. Army Major George M. Wheeler who surveyed much of New Mexico in the late 1870s. Since it is located in Carson National Forest, I wasn't comfortable placing a box on the peak, so I made this a digital box. After climbing it, just click on the link below and print the stamp image. I trust you to climb it first!

Click on Stamp Image.

Directions:
Drive 4 miles north on US HWY 64, then east on HWY 150 to Taos Ski Valley. Continue left through the parking lot and veer left up Twining road for 2 miles, following signs for Williams Lake Trailhead and the Bavarian Lodge and Restaurant. Park at the large parking lot as the road levels off. Arrive early since on the day I climbed it the lot was 1/4 full at 7:30 am.

Clues:
Hike south on broad trail from parking lot, walking past a small pond on the left, then continue past the restaurants and ski area facilities. After the base of the chairlift continue south on the trail on the left up to jct, with Williams Lake a short way to the right. Go left on up to the saddle between Wheeler Peak and Mt Walter, the second highest mountain in NM and not far out of your way if you go left a short way. Go right a short way for Wheeler peak summit. Total elevation gain: 2961'.
