The Pinwheel block is a representation of the water pump windmills found on farms or small towns in Texas. It was a favorite of the pioneer women who settled this part of the state. It was simple yet decorative and it paid homage to the life-preserving windmill that allowed them to survive the harsh conditions at the edge of civilization.
Directions: From Clifton, Texas find the traffic light at the intersection of TX 6 and FM 219, drive 3.3 miles SW on FM 219, going toward Cranfills Gap; turn right onto CR 4150. Continue on CR 4150 for 3.7 miles to FM 182. Bear right onto FM 182 and continue N approximately 0.6 mile to the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Park next to the cemetery and walk through one of the arched gates.
To the box: Notice the rock fences at the back and the side of the cemetery, then go all the way back to where the two come together and form a corner . At the corner, on top of the fence under a loose rock, you’ll find the letterbox. Be stealthy (I carry a camera and take some pictures and if anyone asks, I’m looking for ancestors) . Be respectful of these beautiful and holy grounds.
