From the Parking lot at the Liberty Dam Overlook in McKeldin Area, find the switchback trail behind the kiosk sign. Follow the trail slightly down hill until you come to an intersection of trails.
To the right will take you down the hill further into the valley to a creek bed. You want to go left (there are 2 trails left) on the trail with the white blazes. As you take this trail the river will be down in the valley on your right side. You will walk past a large fallen tree that is suspended in the air balancing in 2 "Y" trees.
Just past this is another intersection of trails. Take the one on your right for 28 kid sized steps. It will take you down hill and you will see the river on either side of you. Take 10 kid sized steps to your right off the trail past the 2 trees with exposed roots (they should be to your right, uphill). You will find a small red oak tree with a SPOR at the base. Here you will find our ladybug box under the roots.
Please make sure you replace the rocks to help keep our box hidden under the roots!
This is our first box placed with my 7 year old. Super easy hike with kids. You can continue down this trail another 0.3 miles to a rock outcropping above the river, or turn around to head back. Hope you enjoyed this, as much as we did making it!
