Status: alive
Monarch Crest Scenic Tram opened on June 1st 1966, and is the oldest working tramway in Colorado. It is located on the top of Monarch Pass at 11,312' and ascends to over 12,000' for magnificent views. However, you can see similar views by looking for this box on the Monarch Crest Trail.
Directions:
Drive 18 miles west on US 50 to Monarch Pass and park by the trailhead for the Monarch Crest Trail near the tram on the right.
Clues:
Walk to trail kiosk with map at left of tram building and go up old dirt road about 0.3 mi to jct with Continental Divide Trail (CDT) with trail register. Bear right on single-track trail for 0.7 mi to jct with sign pointing right for CDT (left goes up a short but steep distance to a great viewpoint). Go straight off trail behind sign to green gate, then left 15 steps to dead standing pine tree with dead tree laying next to it on left. LB is between laying and standing trees under a rock & needles.
Hike length: 1-2 miles
