Trail Rider and I (Pastor’s Wife) have planted this box in memory of my husband, Mark Campbell, whose trail name was Steering Lives. The stamp was his sig stamp. His trail name came from the fact he was both a truck driver and a pastor. He was an interim pastor at both churches in Monroe Center as well as at Flora, IL. He served on the village board when Monroe Center was incorporated and also served as chaplain of the Monroe Center volunteer fire department. He passed away from Parkinson’s in December 2022. During the past years, he would willingly ride along as I boxed. Before that, he was an enthusiastic boxer, especially when we would accompany Trail Rider and her husband, Nam Vet.

One of our most memorable experiences was in 2006 when Trail Rider and I brought our husbands along to look for Sugar River Treed Frog, by Der Mad Stamper. We had tried to find it earlier and could not. During this search, which was done in very icy and muddy conditions, Mark fell out of a tree! We still did not find it. Afterwards, we went to a restaurant in Roscoe, IL where they were not very happy about waiting on us! Too much mud?! It wasn’t until Trail Rider and I tried a third time that we found that very intricate carving.

TO FIND THE I-39 SERIES: STEERING LIVES STAMP: Take I-39 south of Rockford to Exit 111 (Route 72). Go East on 72 to the Monroe Center Cemetery (just east of the school). Turn right onto the first road into the cemetery, along an arborvitae tree line. Drive to the southern-most tree; look for a hole in the branches toward the southeast portion of the tree. Under a SPOS in the crook of the tree is what you’re looking for. Be careful if there are children out-of-doors at the school. Please rehide carefully, making sure the box is in place tightly and under the piece of sod.
