The Pizzelle Letterbox

One of our favorite Christmas cookies is the pizzelle, also known as Italian waffle cookies. They are made in an electric pizzelle iron, which is a lot like a waffle iron. The cookies are flat, thin, crisp cookies that usually have a snowflake pattern on them and are sprinkled with powdered sugar. My family has made these at Christmas time for as long as I can remember. The internet tells me that they are an “old world” cookie which originated in the Abruzzo region of Italy long ago and they would have been made in a heavy iron press held over hot coals until cooked.

Clues to The Pizzelle Letterbox:

The box is planted at the Deep River Landing at 174 River Street in Deep River. The Landing is a small boat launch park with a gazebo and deck on the Connecticut River. The Essex Steam Train stops here at the depot and runs by the park. The riverboat, the Becky Thatcher, docks here for the summer cruises. The steam train depot is decorated in December with lights for the Santa train.

After you find your way to the Landing and park in the parking lot, go to the gazebo area. (You’ll be able to see Gillette Castle from here. Look up the river, across the water.) The gazebo is surrounded by a little walkway with benches. The walkway leads to a boat dock and an octagonal deck and along the river with a stone bank. Go to the deck and from the octagonal deck you should walk past the gazebo with two benches on your left and the stone bank on your right. Walk straight off the walkway, towards the track, past the stone bank, to the wooded area in the corner of the park. To your right you will see a little ‘beach’ area covered in downed trees and branches, maybe a few rowboats will be there too. There are two short, rough paths to this small ‘beach’. Go to the 2nd one, which is also furthest from the gazebo. You’ll see on the left side of this short path is a tall tree stump. The letterbox is in the stump, under a rock. Please carefully re-hide the box.
