Clues

The "Lone Crow" Letterbox is located in the Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary, which is a Mass Audubon Sanctuary in Norfolk, MA. This box is a kid friendly hike, as I planted it with my two year old daughter in tow. Dogs are not allowed at the sanctuary. There is admission if you are not an Audubon Member, Adults $3, Kids (3-12) and Senior (over 65) $2. Hours are Tues-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat and Sun 10am-4pm. Closed Monday except in July and August.

Directions to Stony Brook:

From Rte 495, exit at Rte 1A. Follow Rte 1A north 4 miles to the intersection of rtes 1A and 115 in Norfolk. Turn left onto Rte 115 North. Follow 115 for 1.5 miles and take the third left onto North St. Stony Brook entrance in a few hundred feet up on the right.

Clues:

From the nature center take the Pond Loop trail, begin walking down the trail bordered by stone walls. After the walls you will go over a small bridge, cross it and continue on this trail. If you have the time and the inclination, at marker #8 take a left and follow the boardwalks to the Beech Grove. Unfortunately, many of the beeches have been vandalized by people carving their names, etc. But the boardwalk is a nice walk, saw a giant snapping turtle there when planting the box. If you don't have time don't turn, stay on Pond Loop trail. After marker #14 on your right, there will be a small path on the right leading up. Take this path between the ferns, and into what looked to me like a tree graveyard. There are numerous dead trees in various states of disarray. Look around for trees that have fallen over and now have most of their roots exposed. Of these trees, one of them has some significant boulders down by the exposed roots. "Lone Crow" can be found between the boulder closest to the path and the tree. It is under a number of leaves and such, please take care to rehide it under them as well. Hope you enjoy "Lone Crow" and Happy future hunting, if you are game, Pond Loop will continue all the way around (thus the name Loop) and bring you back to the nature center at the Butterfly garden. It is quite a nice hike, or feel free to return the way you came.
