A short story to begin…
My fiancé had me buy an Arizona Atlas and Gazetteer when we were looking for some land for a possible future home. After I bought the book, I was like a kid with his first map and started flipping the pages…That is when I found the “Well That Johnny Dug”.
Then I started asking the logical questions. “Who is Johnny, and how good was he at digging wells?” I had to find out. Because the well is located on the Barry M. Goldwater Bombing Range, a permit was required to see it. After a three hour trip to the Gila Bend Airfield Security office with my future uncle, I had the permit, more maps, and was ready to go.

The gate (14) into the area is located at mile mark 27.1 on highway 85. The Well That Johnny Dug is approximately 9 miles east of the highway. After some dirt path driving (and through plenty of washes), we were able to locate the well. Let’s just say Johnny wasn’t into digging any grand style wells. Plenty of pieces of corrugated metal laying around showed us that Johnny wasn’t interested in keeping his home in one piece either.

After seeing the well, as well as a few other sites, we headed back to the gate. Once outside the gate, I placed my first letterbox.

To find the letterbox, follow the fence line from the gate to the southern corner. From there, go southwest to the second post. Seven paces to the west from the post in the trunk of the dead tree is where you’ll find the letterbox. Please replace the box well under bark and plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.

I will not be able to check on this often, please let me know if the letterbox is missing.
