This box was reported missing on 7/17/10. We checked it out and sure enough, it is gone. We hope to replace it soon.

The Saint George Reef Lighthouse stands on an exposed rock off the coast of Northern California. The light from the tower warned vessels away from the hazardous reef hidden beneath the surface from 1892 until it was deactivated in 1975.

To find this letter box, begin at the intersection of Pebble Beach Dr. and Washington Blvd. Go West on Washington toward the Point St. George Historic Area .6 miles to the second gated pull-out on the left. (One or two cars can park here just off the road in front of the gate) From inside the gate go right on the gravel road. At the fork go left about 20 yards until you are facing the ocean. Turn right and walk down the road. On a clear day you can see the Saint George Reef Lighthouse directly in front of you several miles out to sea. Continue to walk with the base of the cliffs on your right and a rocky point at the bottom of the hill on your left. The cliffs turn into a high knoll and the road ends at the bottom of the hill. As you round the knoll you will see a large, free-standing, oval rock. The box is hidden at the back base of the rock, beneath some smaller flat rocks.

This area can be quite windy and cool. You may want to take a jacket even when the sun is shining. There are several high-vantage view points surrounding the area so please take care to not accidentally reveal the location of this box and carefully replace it in its protected hiding place.
