This box is dedicated to our Grandpa George. Catalina isn’t the same without him.

This journey will take you to the site where the Pacific Wireless Station (built in 1902) stood. It was the sister station to the Marconi wireless telegraphy station in San Pedro. Morse code signals were sent between the mainland and Avalon through this station. In 1919, the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company opened the island’s first commercial radio telephone system at Pebbly Beach. This system was used until 1923 when two submarine cables were laid between Catalina and the mainland.

Begin at Step Beach near the arch that leads you via Casino. Stand with your back to the beach, and go forward past the traffic circle (on your left) and up Marilla Avenue. Turn right on Vieudelou Avenue.

As you continue up the hill and around the corner the road becomes Chimes Tower Road. (If you are driving, you will have to go left here on Stage Coach Road and continue around until it becomes Chimes Tower Road or take Chimes Tower Road up and park at the Zane Grey Hotel where the road becomes one way.) On your left you will see the Zane Grey Hotel. This former home of author Zane Grey was modeled after a Hopi Indian dwelling. To the right you will pass the Chimes Tower which houses Deagan Westminster chimes given to the city by Ada Wrigley, wife of William Wrigley, Jr., in 1925. Although the bells chime automatically every 15 minutes, they can also be played manually from an electric console located in the tower. The console was moved here from its original home at the foot of the pier in the 1950s.

Continue up the hill to the white fence. Climb through the fence and carefully down the slope. Just in front of the palm tree is the beginning of a trail. Go down the trail and to the right along the rock wall. Stop when you get to the broken white railing. Below the railing there is a loose rock in the wall. (It is the second from the end in the middle row.) Remove the rock and you will find Grandpa’s box. Please return the box to its hiding place when you are finished and replace the rock so that the box will be well hidden.
