Difficulty: trail moderate, clues easy.
Walk time: about 15 minutes one way.
Stamp hand-carved.
Version 2.0: this is the second location for this box.
Status: RETIRED

This letterbox is on the lower slopes of Brown Mountain a little bit west of Tucson. From I-10, take exit 257. Drive west on Speedway Blvd. (which changes its name to Gates Pass Rd.) for about 9.4 miles. Turn right on Kinney Rd. and go about 0.6 miles. Turn left on McCain Loop Rd. and go about 0.3 miles to a parking area (M8) on the right. This is the trailhead for the Brown Mountain Trail.

Walk northwest on the Brown Mountain Trail. At the signed trail junction, go left (straight). You will go down and out of a large wash. You will soon come to another signed trail junction. Go left (straight). From this junction go about 88 steps up the trail to a tall Saguaro Cactus on the left side of the trail. It has one arm on its south side and there is a large cluster of Prickly Pear Cactus between the trail and the Saguaro. From the back side of the Saguaro, go at about 222 degrees (from mag. north) for about 44 steps to a moderate-size Ironwood Tree. The box is under the west side of the tree under a large flat rock covered with some twigs and plant debris. Be alert for snakes.

Please be sure the contents are double ziplocked when you put them back in the box (i.e. the stamp is in a ziploc, the book is in a ziploc, and the two are in the larger ziploc bag). Please rehide the box well under rocks, twigs and plant debris so that it can not be seen from any direction.

This is a great area for a variety of Sonoran Desert birds. The largest covey of Gambel’s Quail I have ever seen was along this trail.

Please contact me if the box needs attention:
