A fun-filled hike with friends in search of the Portal Trail boxes was had by all and that is how this box found itself under a House Rock. =-) We found ourselves searching for House Rocks on this trip and loving every minute of it. =-) So many house rocks, so little time. Moab is filled with rocks, letterboxes, fun people. However, do I juggle all of these things in such a short amount of time. Thanks to KAT, Rivergeek and Kennamtn whose great boxes brought us to this area. We had to leave something behind for them to find. =-)

Difficulty: 1.8 miles one way, plus maybe 1/2 mile depending where you start from. All uphill one way with a 980 ft. elevation gain, but all downhill coming back! Exposed areas with no railings. Not for small children. Dogs are questionable, I don't take mine on this particular trail because they wrestle and don't watch for cliff edges very well!

Directions: From Moab, head North about 1/2 mile past the bridge over the Colorado River, turn left on Potash Rd. (if you go by the entrance to Arches National Park, you have gone too far). Once on the Potash Road (Utah 279), drive about 4 miles and look for a pullout on the river side a little ways past mile marker 12. From this pullout, look up the cliff for a little trail heading up to the main trail. This will put you right at the BLM trail sign-in. Your other option is to keep driving another 1/2 mile to the Jaycee Rec. Area (campsites) and start at the very beginning of the trail. There is a Portal Trail sign marking the trailhead. Starting at the Jaycees will add 1/2 mile each way to your hike, but it is flat along that part.

Clues: Find the Portal Trail boxes, and oh please be careful that you do not fly away at the top. On your way back down think about that diving board rock you had to find earlier in your hike. A little ways down past it, the trail travels a good distance on a solid, flat gray rock. Look to your right and there you will see layers of rocks about 15 feet high. A HOUSE ROCK stands all by his lonesome on these layers awaiting your visit. Under its southwest side, find “Juggling the Rocks.”
