Find one box on an easy half mile round trip hike, the perfect chance to stretch your legs while on a long trip on I-95 through Connecticut. Figure about a half hour to get the box, it may take longer if you like the overview or the history. Stroller, bike, dog, and kid friendly. Be careful when crossing at the crosswalk.
From I-95 north or south take exit 70 for Old Lyme.
From I-95 south at the bottom of the exit ramp go straight at the light, and straight at the next light. Turn left at the third light, the junction of route 156, staying in the left hand lane then turn left again at the next light into the commuter parking lot.
From I-95 north at the bottom of the exit ramp turn left at the light, staying in the right hand lane turn right at the next light into the commuter parking lot.
WARNING: DON’T LEAVE ANY VALUBLES OUT IN THE OPEN (right Bluebird?). After parking in the commuter parking lot follow the signs for the river overview, turning right at the entrance to the commuter parking lot, at the next intersection turn left to cross at the crosswalk (push the button). Left again after crossing the road then follow the concrete walkway (and the signs) up the hill to the right, with the I-95 entrance ramp behind the fence off to the left. This is the pedestrian walkway across the bridge.
As you get near the bridge you’ll see a sign with an arrow pointing right toward a power line tower and a paved path, follow the paved path. The path parallels an old stonewall for a ways then zig zags down hill, left and right, past the sign for the 1948 bridge, and ends in the paved information area. Notice the granite map of the mouth of the Connecticut River set into the pavement and stop and read about the history of the crossings of the river. When you’re done, walk around the power line tower to the north to find the sign for the 1911 bridge. Go to the sign and turn around. With your back to the river you’ll see half a dozen fir trees in front of you with the fence on the north side. Look under the south side of the closest tree to find your prize.
After stamping in and rehiding the box retrace your steps down the hill, across the road and back into the commuter parking lot to your car. If heading on I-95 south go straight at the light at the entrance of the parking lot and you’ll be on the I-95 south entrance ramp. If you’re going on I-95 north, go right at the entrance to the parking lot, staying in the right hand lane, turn right at the next light staying on route 1, straight at the next light. At the next intersection stay in the right hand lane and turn right at the light then left, after passing under the overpass, onto the I-95 north entrance ramp.
We hope you enjoyed this little history lesson and the chance to stretch your legs.
