TIME: 15 Minutes

STATUS: OK, CHECKED BY PLACER 8-2-05.

THIS EXHIBITION HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL 10-1-05.
LETTERBOX WILL REMAIN IN PLACE UNTIL THEN.

ADDED NOTE: LARGE BEAR SCULPTURE HAS BEEN REMOVED. DON'T KNOW WHY; OTHER SCULPTURES ARE STILL THERE. I'LL KEEP THE BOX IN PLACE UNTIL 10-1. YOU CAN STILL FIND IT EASY ENOUGH WITHOUT THE BEAR TO GUIDE YOU.

"Tom Otterness in Indianapolis" is an exhibition of 25 bronze sculptures placed in public areas thoughout downtown. It runs from April 15 - July 31, 2005. Sponsored by the Arts Council of Indianapolis, this is the largest public art exhibit ever held in our city. Tom Otterness, originally from Kansas and now living in New York City, is considered one of the premier public artists in the US today. Many of these sculptures were part of a recent exhibit "Tom Otterness on Broadway". For a map, go to www.indyarts.org. There is also one posted at each location.

CLUES:

"Large Bear" is located at the entrance to the Indianapolis Zoo & White River Gardens. You may have to pay a parking fee during business hours (if the booths at the lot entrance are occupied), or you can park free at the White River State Park and walk over. I planted this box after work and just drove right in.

Stand in front of "Large Bear" and take a bearing of 145 degrees. Walk approx. 62 paces along the curved walkway that circles White River Gardens. You'll pass 10 flower urns on your right. You'll end up just past the start of the green gated area of the gardens on your left and a grouping of three spruce trees on your right.

You will find this letterbox at the southeast side of the farthest spruce under one of its weeping boughs. Depending on the time of day, this can be a very busy place. So please be discreet.

Enjoy these whimsical sculptures and make time to see them all.
