* * * NOTE: This letterbox is probably missing. In 2004, Hurricane Frances passed very close to Nassau, and there was six feet of storm surge, so much of this waterfront area may have been washed away. The box was reported unfound in Feb 06. This walk along the beach is still nice if you want to try to confirm it is missing. * * *

Terrain: Easy - Although your feet will probably get wet
Clues: Easy

The Bahamas First Letterbox?

When going to New Providence Island, I looked for clues to letterboxes and was surprised there seemed to be none. After getting there, I realized why. There are really no hiking trails to speak of, and most of the island is either city, beach, or covered with a dense scrub. Oh well, this will be easy, then, as things ought to be in the Bahamas. As one man told me there, "Don't rush, you'll stand out." Do a little homework ahead of time and you should be able to take a leisurely stroll and find this box in plenty of time to order another Bahama Mama and catch some more rays.

CLUES: Start at the placed named for the first telegraph cable to reach the island, in 1892. Coming from Paradise Island you can catch a water taxi to Nassau for $3/person (as of this writing) and then catch the #10 bus, $1/person. There's a "Crystal Palace" there and you can see the small Cay where Edward Teach and his crew were rumored to party before setting back to sea. Where to head from here? Bahama Mama and her daughter face the direction you need to go, perhaps they are waiting for the Green Flash. Pass a few hotels and houses until you come to the second vacant lot. It contains a few tree stumps, and at its back is a chain link fence. East of center, near the fence, there is a tree stump 2-3 feet high, and just east of that is a rock with a small hollow underneath.

Notes:
- No ink pad in the box so please bring your own.
- Please do not ask me for additional hints without offering a bribe of unpublished clues, hitchhikers, etc.
- As I probably won't get back this way very often, send me an email and let me know how the box is doing: jelybean.books@comcast.net.
